The empty multi-storey buildings bear witness to a time when Gunkanjima was one of the most densely populated places on earth. In the 1950s, around 5000 people lived on the island. The Mitsubishi Group used to exploit a coal mine there. In 1974 the mine was closed, many residents left the island. The photographers Yves Marchand and Romain Meffre documented the scenery between 2008 and 2012. (+)
